Austin Floods: the Numbers

Here in Austin, Texas, when it rains, it pours.

For real.

In the last 30 days, Lake Travis has risen 41.45 feet.  In fact, on October 20th we reached our 5th highest water level ever at 704.39 feet.  That is just 8 feet below Mansfield Dam’s spillway.  And which is especially interesting given we were in our 3rd worst drought ever just 5 years ago when the lake reached at 618.64 feet.

A Video Tour of What’s Growing in Our Garden

Vegetable gardens are always works in progress.  Experiments.  I’ve found it helpful to hear how other people’s experiments are going – what’s thriving and what’s not – so that I  can add those lessons learned to my own and hopefully produce more food for our table.  In an effort of sharing, here’s the current state of my garden.

Now Eating

  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Carrots
  • Summer Squash
  • Banana Peppers
  • Jalapeño Peppers
  • Strawberries (although most are going to the bugs)
  • Basil

coming soon

  • Delicata Squash
  • Cucumbers
  • Tomatoes (grape and cherry)
  • Bell Peppers
  • Blackberries

a ways off

  • Green Beans
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Butternut Squash
  • Spaghetti Squash
  • Acorn Squash
  • Raspberries

Done for the season

  • Kale (thanks to a mob of caterpillars)

We were fortunate to have such luck with kale, spinach, and lettuce early this season to have salads almost every day (something that thankfully Jared and Little Guy enjoyed and didn’t get tired of).  It seems we are just around the corner from switching from salads to squash and tomatoes, and I’m feeling the need to expand my recipe repertoire of soups and sauces.

What’s growing in your vegetable garden?  Anyone have tomato or squash recipes to share?

Austin Investment Property

What if you could be alerted any time a property hit the market at a price per square foot signficantly under norm for the size and neighborhood the home is located in?  We have created just such an alert for various areas of Austin in order to better serve our investor clients and even those looking to find a great deal on their next home.  If you would like to be added to our alert list either for all of Austin or specific neighborhoods, please email jill@mysolis.com.  Foreclosure and short-sale (pre-foreclosure) alerts are also available, although we feel the price per square foot alerts are a more reliable indication that the home may be a good buy.  Admittedly, what makes a property a smart investment amounts to much more than price per square foot, but you have to start somewhere.
